Local residents, Simon de Deney and Ben Mathis have been selected to contest the 2015 general election for Hackney Liberal Democrats.

Ben Mathis (Hackney South and Shoreditch) has lived in Hackney since 2009. He works on the railways and is well-known around the local rail network. Ben is a keen gardener and nature-lover and has worked with residents on green community projects in his local area - he takes a strong interest in protecting Hackney's environment and green spaces.

In recent years, Ben has worked with the Lib Dem group on Hackney Council campaigning for better recycling, fewer betting shops and no "taser" stun guns on the borough's streets.

Simon de Deney (Hackney North and Stoke Newington) is an actor, writer and director and a third generation Hackney resident . He has performed at the (Finsbury) Park theatre, the Dalston Ophelia theatre and open air shows in Abney Park. He was Chair of Governors at Shacklewell School for seven years and is currently a governor at Grasmere School.

Simon was the Liberal Democrat candidate for Mayor of Hackney in 2014. His interest and work in community politics stems from working with gang members to set up their own businesses. His particular interests are education and housing.
