Worrying Trend of Violence in Schools highlighted by Latest Exclusion Figures


Figures released detailing levels of permanent and fixed-period exclusions for 2015/16 highlight a worrying trend of violence in our schools with thousands of young people being excluded for violent or threatening behaviour.


In primary schools 27,010 children were excluded due to physical assaults against pupils and staff.

In secondary schools 50,500 were excluded temporarily or permanently due to physical assault.


Hackney had 2083 fixed-period exclusions across all its state-funded primary, secondary and special schools with 458 cases due to physical assault against a pupil or adult and a further 304 cases due to verbally threatening behaviour towards a pupil or adult.


1225 pupils enrolled had one or more period of exclusion with 128 of these cases at Primary School level.


Darren Martin, Hackney Liberal Democrat Spokesperson said:


“Teachers are under incredible pressure in their jobs, not least because of mounting workloads and cuts to school budgets. But on top of that, having to worry about violence when they set foot in the classroom is absolutely unacceptable. 


"The increase in levels of permanent and fixed-term exclusions shows that schools are being left to deal with serious behavioural problems with measures that teachers only ever want to use as a last resort.


"It is clear that increasing class sizes and lack of resources due to deep cuts means teachers are not able to, and do not have the support required, to give disruptive pupils the care and attention they need to prevent the disruptive behaviour from becoming more serious and even violent.


"There of course needs to be resources available to young people and parents away from the classroom in communities to work with troubled young people, and these are disappearing also due to the Government cuts.


"We need to tackle the root causes of this crisis earlier on and prevent problem behaviour developing, as well as giving schools and teachers the support they need."
